The first “Liberty Head” gold coin was produced in the late 1840s in response to an excessive amount of gold available from the California Gold Rush. The obverse of these coins depicts the head of “Lady Liberty,” a symbol of the American ideal of freedom for all. The 6 major types of Liberty Head coins include the Gold Dollar (1849-1854), Liberty Head (1840-1907), Liberty Head Five Dollar (1839-1908), Liberty Head Ten Dollar (1838-1907), Liberty Head Twenty Dollar (1849-1907), and Liberty Head Two And One Half (1843-1907).
